The Bead Microbusiness of Northern Uganda
(an ALARM ministry)
ALARM (African Leadership and Reconciliation Ministries) was founded in 1994 in response to the horrific genocide that took place in Rwanda. Tribal violence and warfare killed or drove away many of the pastors and church leaders, which threatened church growth in Africa. God called an African man to return to Rwanda to help support the few remaining leaders and to raise up new ones. Listen to his compelling testimony here.
Since that time ALARM has become a ministry that addresses several different needs of the African people in various countries. To get the full historical background, mission statement, and a list of ALARM's current ministries, click here.
You've heard the familiar proverb, "Give a man a fish, and feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." One of ALARM's goals is to train women to earn a living through establishing microbusinesses, and the Bead Business of Uganda certainly caught our attention. These twenty-two women - most of whom are widowed or HIV positive, and all of whom are very poor - work together to make beautiful beads from recycled paper. The process of cutting and rolling the paper and applying several layers of varnish takes about two weeks. The result is beautiful and colorful beaded jewelry, which is sold to enable them to feed and educate their children ( read some of their stories here)!
The jewelry items make excellent gifts for friends, teachers, Bible-study leaders, etc., and are fantastic ways to spread the word about ALARM. If you are interested in purchasing jewelry items, please contact us.
God placed this ministry in our hearts and in our laps. Won't you please partner with us to help these African women to live and thrive. They need us! They also need our ongoing prayers.

HSLB Marketplace
HSLB began as a way to help homeschooling families, primarily by selling worthwhile books at affordable prices. We have been pondering other ways we can assist, as well.
From time to time, we hear from homeschool families seeking venues by which to market a product they have created. Like us, they have found how advertising costs for space in magazines, search engines, and online companies can drive a monstrous hole in a small budget! We ourselves must be very selective spending our advertising dollars – otherwise, our product prices would creep up as we pass along the expense to you. We are not willing to compromise in this way (which is one reason why we honor our wonderful customers’ recommendations through the
HSLB Book Points Program)!
So, to help others who may face the same struggles, we have launched the
HSLB Marketplace Service. If you have created a product or an online service, we would love to help you get the word out! We will not
sell your product or service; rather we will
advertise it by providing a link on our website.
Sounds great, right? But get to the bottom line, you say.
How much will it cost me? Well, you pay
nothing! (You read correctly,
no money -- isn’t that refreshing?)!
But it will “cost” you something---and here are the details:
- You must submit your product, with the understanding it will not be returned. We want to make sure it fits our Marketplace Standards and Guidelines, and will serve the homeschooling community. Your product can certainly be beneficial to non-homeschoolers as well.
- We require your agreement that HSLB customers receive at least a 10% discount off the purchase price.
- If possible, we would appreciate you adding a link to HSLB on your website. (We won’t hold you to that but would say, “woo-hoo” if you did!)
We hope to showcase a different product in each of our monthly newsletters, and will continue to provide links to previous items on our website.
